Windward Bound
A Unique Summer Camp Experience
BaySail's Windward Bound program offers an immersive sail training experience for young people aged 14-18. This week-long summer program provides participants with the opportunity to live and learn aboard a traditional sailing ship, gaining valuable skills and fostering personal growth.
Trainees will work alongside experienced crew members, learning essential seamanship skills such as sail and line handling, emergency procedures, and watch standing. By the end of the program, they will work as a team to perform these duties, building teamwork, communication, leadership, and integrity. In addition to these "soft skills," trainees will also develop "hard skills" in areas like boat safety, engineering, seamanship, and even cooking. Windward Bound serves as a fantastic introduction to the maritime industry, with past participants going on to pursue careers in sailing and related fields. The program includes a minimum of two port stops, at least one overnight, and one evening at anchor, with visits to locations like Tawas, Alpena, and Mackinac Island. To encourage full engagement, electronic devices are limited, and a crew member is designated for photography. Students also learn traditional navigation methods, such as using a sextant and paper charts.
Adventure Education
Sail Training Education
The core of Windward Bound lies in its hands-on sail training. Participants are not merely passengers, but active crew members. They'll learn the intricacies of raising, lowering, and trimming sails, mastering the lines and knots essential to a sailing vessel. Under the guidance of experienced sailors, they'll take turns at the helm, feeling the ship respond to their commands and the wind's power. They'll also participate in routine shipboard duties, from standing watch and navigating to cooking and cleaning, fostering a sense of responsibility and teamwork. This immersive experience provides a practical understanding of traditional sailing, building confidence and a deep appreciation for maritime heritage.
